How do spiritual and environmental awareness relate?

I'm glad this question has been asked!
This is a question I've been thinking and speaking about ever since I met and spoke with Al Gore...I think that the environmental crisis is a great spiritual opportunity. How so? The environmental crisis has been caused by excessive consumption in large part. Why do we consume so much? To fill a hole in ourselves, believing that material objects will fulfill us. This is a misguided attempt as no amount of stuff will ever fill this hole. The source of fulfillment is inside of us and is non-material in nature. How we connect with this place inside is our spiritual quest. I personally meditate, do yoga, listen to mystical poetry etc.
Eco philosopher Peter Russell has also addressed this issue brilliantly. I recommend listening to his talk on this topic on his eponymous website.
